Email override
It would be very useful to be able to override any automated emails triggered by an order update.
Let's say an admin changes the order status to shipped (or any other status that automatically sends a generic email), but wants to send a custom email tailored to the buyers specific unique situation, it would be nice to be able to choose to either intercept the email and alter it before it gets sent, or choose to not send it at all.
A feature that might come along with this would be to choose to "warn" any time an admin initiated action is set to cause an email to be sent before the save function happens, though I assume it would probably be easier from a programming standpoint to add an alternate function to the "Save" button called "Save and override email" or something like that, thereby adding a boolean to the save function which would cause all automated emails (rule engine or otherwise) to not fire, regardless of whether or not they exist.
This "email override" boolean could even be vetoed in a rule engine in EXTRA specific important scenarios where you want to guarantee under any and all circumstances that an rule's email action be sent. perhaps by adding an "ignore email override" checkbox to rules containing email actions.

I just added ANOTHER order status to a long and growing list of order statuses for this very reason.
I like the prompt when changes will trigger an email idea, offering the option to skip the email, except I'm not sure I want that when changing the status of a bunch of orders at the same time (like end of day when you might change a bunch of orders to "Shipped") ? If this can be logically worked out for all common scenarios, I'm in!1 -
Perhaps on bulk changes there coyld simply be two options "change status with notification" and "change status without notification". Then you would simply select the appropriate orders and run two separate bulk changes.

I agree - IF it's one prompt for the group, instead of individual prompts for every order in the group, that would be great.

This would be incredibly helpful! We have all sorts of situations where we need to make an update and don't want to send an email. Extra statuses for this purpose makes things more complicated. If this was an option, we could simplify our process.
