The same functionality could be used as a fraud mitigation tool on the front end.
It would be something to implement AFTER the checkout has been completed, and only enacted on 'high risk' orders, as determined by the store admin.
The store admin would determine what constitutes a 'high risk' order in the AC store rule engine. (i.e. order over $1000, foreign IP address, declined payment history etc)
If the 'high risk' flag is triggered, then on the checkout confirmation page, the customer will be ask to perform phone number verification. If the verification is completed successfully it will be noted in the AC admin and the store owner can use that extra data point to determine whether the order is approved or still requires further investigation.
