Product Count in Sub-category Menus

We have had multiple customers say they like the feature on one of our competitor website that shows how many products are in each sub-category in the menu:

 
AmeriCommerce already has a $$PRODUCTCOUNT$$ merge code, but it does not appear to work in any of the menu widgets.
