This has been an issue for us for a while, and not just with the API, creating new users from the admin end doesn't make a password. We have to tell our customers to use the Forgot Password link to make one.

Ira, can you clarify your request? Do you mean customers or store users?

    Customers.

"We like to welcome you to our store. Attached is your User ID and Temporary Password."

    We can't do this.

    Colin:

I just thought I would mention that there is a way to set a password for new customer, but not while creating the customer.  Create the new customer, then edit the customer and click "Reset Password":

An extra step, but it is possible.

Yes, I did know that thanks tho. I do that, but it just feels pretty inappropriate for an admin to know a customers password at any point in time. even if its temporary until they "maybe" change it. now if the reset password used a hidden random password that was emailed directly to the customer. tthat would be cool. it would be even cooler if the customer was forced to reset it upon login.

I totally agree.  Unfortunately some of our customers just can not figure out how to reset their passwords using the forgot password link, and I end up using that to set one for them.  I generally use my password manager to generate a 15 digit random password (we have had issues if we use one longer than 15 digits). I do not save them, so it is never something I would remember.  But inevitably I get an email back from them, "Hey that worked, I will just use that one".  Would be great if we could generate one without seeing it.  In our Google Business Email as an admin I can manually set a password OR have the system email them a randomly generated one, and that option in Cart would be very helpful. I am torn about forcing a password reset, since they many times they can't figure out how to reset their password in the first place, but from a security standpoint we should....maybe have a checkbox to optionally force the password to be reset.
