This is already completed, our entire network is gzipped through a hardware appliance now. We had to do a very expensive F5 hardware appliance because the load for CPU to enable it across all our sites went up dramatically. Now your customers get their content fully gzipped at a high compression ratio.

This is something that every Americommerce store owner should support. Gzip compression means that the Americommerce server would look at a visitors browser and determine if the browser can support Gzip (has been supported since IE 4). If it can, the server will automatically compress your html and scripts files, send them to the users browser where they automatically open. This compression would typically reduce a 100k html file to around 15k. It can reduce jquery and CSS script files by as much as 80 percent of the actual size. The result is a significant decrease in the amount of time that it takes for your web page to load. Gzip reduces bandwidth usage but also increases CPU usage in order to compress the files. As this technology has improved so has the computing power of web servers making this a viable option. It does take care and time for server configuration but it should be well worth the effort. For site owners it will help increase our page rankings and give our shoppers much faster page loads. For Americommerce, this will give them a competitive advantage in the E-Commerce hosting marketplace. We have a major competitor who's site is hosted on a server using Gzip. They have a third more content on the home page than we do but their site loads 3 times faster than ours. Let's get on board with this feature request and start selling more product.

This sounds like a great thing to have. Bandwidth costs are ridiculous.

Not only does this help the end user load your site faster, it helps search engines crawl your site faster, which means if you have hundreds or thousands of pages to crawl, search engines will be able to do so more efficiently. It could even help with your PageRank. This is invaluable and needs to be implemented ASAP. 3 votes from me.

I would love for this to be implemented, our sites have a lot of information, and the speed increase would be better for our customers.

It saves AmeriCommerce bandwidth, saves our customers time, and makes the internet ever so slightly neater. It's a win for everyone. I sincerely wish we had this feature!

Another option would be to integrate with CloudFlare: http://www.cloudflare.com/overview.html Doing so would also help reduce unwanted spiders from bad IP Addresses as suggested here: http://vote.americommerce.com/forums/25843-feature-ideas/suggestions/1173979-shared-list-of-malicious-or-suspicious-ips-to-sa?ref=title

Enabling gzip compression helps especially with small file delivery on a massive scale. This is for your inventory images (jpeg, gif), etc and your text/css, etc. It's an industry standard way to speed up site deliver. Here are a few other sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gzip http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/WindowsServer2003/Library/IIS/25d2170b-09c0-45fd-8da4-898cf9a7d568.mspx?mfr=true Gzip can be enabled on Apache and IIS servers. I'm new to AmeriCommerce, but it would seem these sites are hosted on IIS Servers, so the Microsoft link would apply.
