Why is it that they rely on eachother so heavily yet its a fully manual and tedious process to set up the linkages? Why not just make variants auto create and auto group to their valid "attributes", or better yet combine them and operate on a token/merge/variable system for your granular searches and product filtering? Its kinda inefficient to more or less make 2 different systems of product building and identification. And then manually maintain it. Slow. Annoying. Too much room for error and inconsistancy. Too much time. Please combine these systems.

  I guess it depends on each store's specific catalog. For my stores, they certainly are not the same thing and I would not want them combined.

  I agree, the attributes seem to be too much of a manual process. It does allow you to sort products easily but I can't imagine this is how a company like Office Depot or Best Buy do it. Setting up attributes takes forever and is much hard to create in bulk than variants. If you had an ability to mass produce faster this could be very helpful. For example if you wanted to have a bunch of different products to be classified under a certain attribute you should be able to select those products and set them to that particular attribute.
