Pagination (18)
CompletedDynamic category pages with custom URLS in AC are viewed as duplicate content by google because regardless of the number of pages, AC has the same URL, meta information and header content, etc. What is needed is to add Page 1 of X, Page 23 of X, etc. at the end of each custom URL when more than one page is generated by AC. It would also be ideal to have a canonical tag on all but the first page that point back to the first page. The current configuration is a significant SEO shortcomming.

I would be careful with using a canonical tag on paginated pages. As recommended by Google, a better solution would be to apply a "noindex" tag to the subsequent pages. "@vizualbod.com, George: I would not specify the canonical URL as the first page of listings for paginated content. Why not? As mentioned earlier, rel="canonical" does not accumulate text contents from various pages -- so it should only be used in situations where the content is identical or nearly identical. In a paginated series, each page contains entirely different content/items so they shouldn't be grouped as one URL. Thanks for asking, though! Google has recently given finer control to the webmaster in reporting URL parameters. In theory, this should really help with pagination issues, however I have yet to see a change in the index. Announcement: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/07/improved-handling-of-urls-with.html 0 -
Dave, I've actually read arguments against both canonical tags and noindex for pages. The method in this idea seems to be the most accepted way of handing it as canonical and noindex would have about the same results since only the first page's content would get any indexing love. 0 -
@Ryan - I would love to see your sources on the subject. No offense, but Google makes the rules with regards to how they crawl and index content, I'm more inclined to follow their specific advice on the matter. Based on the links I provided, they are fa 0 -
But to solve this with noindex makes no sense - you would lose all the individual products on these pages. This should be an easy fix and is a real shortcoming as it currently stands. 0 -
@eldude: Noindex would only apply to the subsequent category pages, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc... The product pages would still be found since the default action for spiders is to follow. I don't really mind if users never find page 6 of a category page. The prod 0 -
@Dave: I agree 100%. All subsequent category pages should be noindex, follow. This is so these pages don't compete against your main category page for your keyword. According to studies by Aaron Wall, the products will still be crawled and indexed. This i 0 -
